LG vs. Samsung washer and dryer pairs are pretty similar, but some key differences in design and functionality are worth noting.

I'm the founder of Designer Appliances, a premier appliance store in New Jersey, and I have 15+ years of experience. I've test-driven these LG and Samsung washers and dryers (and their predecessors), and sat through countless hours of training. Most importantly, I've heard real-life feedback from our customers in real-time.

In this article, I'll share my experience explaining what distinguishes LG and Samsung. Also, I'll point out notable products from each brand.

My cofounder John reviewed LG front load washers.

Appliance Matchmaker

Are LG or Samsung a match for you?

What I love about LG and Samsung washer and dryer pairs is that they offer an fantastic clean along with high-tech bells and whistles. You won't feel like you fell for color or the smartphone app when you buy a set. Your clothes will be clean, and with a touch of a button, you can sanitize them to help reduce allergens in your life. The feature list goes on.

Pros: Reasons To Buy LG or Samsung Washer and Dryer

  • Extensive selection & products for all budgets. Both LG and Samsung feature products in an easy-to-understand "good, better, best" upgrade path. For example, the entry-level products have a smaller capacity; they lack the most advanced cleaning tech such as steam/sanitize. The brands save convenience features such as ultra-fast wash to higher-end sets.
  • Front load as well as top load washers. Both brands started their journey in the US with advanced front load washers. However, top load washers are popular again, and each company does an amazing job with its top load selection.
  • Strong emphasis on wifi connectivity. App support to detect maintenance issues and cycle notifications are part of the benefits you will get with both LG and Samsung.
  • LG has better solutions for tight spaces. Washers and dryers got bigger over the years. If you are replacing an old machine or living in an urban apartment, you might not have unlimited space. LG makes most shallow full-sized (27-inch wide) washers and dryers. The brand also offers 24-inch compact laundry and all-in-one washer dryer combos.
  • Samsung packs more features in its budget lineup. The company is going after a more significant market share and introduced entry-level products with outstanding features (generally reserved for high-end models.)
  • The LG WashTower is a great stackable solution. Many people love to save space by stacking their dryers on their washers. The stackable configuration also helps protect your back. The downside is that the dryer controls become hard to reach. LG WashTower solved this problem by placing controls in the middle.

Cons: Reasons To Avoid LG and Samsung Washers and Dryers

  • Mold prevention creates additional chores. LG and Samsung front load washers provide superior clean over the top loaders. In addition, the front loaders are quiet and stylish. However, mold can become a nuisance if you don't wipe the door gasket with bleach and leave the door ajar to vent.
  • No bulk detergent dispensers. LG and Samsung are lagging behind GE and Whirlpool regarding load-and-forget detergent dispensers. Most recently, Samsung introduced one top load washer that can hold only 12 loads of detergent.
  • Samsung's MultiControl Kit is confusing. LG achieved great success with its WashTower laundry (stacked washer and dryer with middle controls for easy reach.) In response, Samsung released a multicontrol kit between the washer and the stacked dryer. Confusing to install and wrap your head around.
  • Samsung FlexWash and LG Sidekick solutions flopped. Samsung incorporated a small second washer in its FlexWash series. The idea was to run two loads at the same time. Similarly, LG made the SideKick small washer pedestal. However, customers could not wrap their heads around these innovations and found it difficult to load detergent twice and unload a larger load, among other issues.
  • Consider a Speed Queen if you prefer an old-fashioned agitator. Although both LG and Samsung make agitator top load washers, we prefer the gentle impeller top loaders from these brands. Speed Queen washer is the clear market leader for traditional agitators.
  • Menus and control panels might be confusing to some. Make sure to look at the control panel in product pictures (or in person at a store.) Some people just want a simple knob to run a load. Also, wifi and smart app features are not appealing to a great majority of people who simply want to tackle a chore.

Samsung is the market leader when it comes to washing machines. Here is our video review.

5) Most Innovative LG Washer and Dryer: WM9000HVA

LG Washer WM9000HVA

Width: 29 inches | Height: 41 1/4 inches | Depth: 33 3/4 inches | Capacity: 5.2 cu. ft. | Cycles/Options: 14/13 | RPM: 1,300 | Color: Graphite Steel | Steam Washer/Dryer: Yes/Yes | Stackable: No | Energy Star: Enhanced Level, CEE Tier 3

This is unquestionably one of the best washers on the market. It's a mega-sized model with a 29-inch width and a 5.2 cu. ft. capacity that you can beef up by another 1 cu. ft. by setting it atop the LG SideKick pedestal washer. LG calls this configuration its LG TwinWash system with LG SideKick; it has 6.2 cu. ft. total capacity, which is enormous for a front loader. You can wash two types of laundry with this system: the SideKick washes delicates and light laundry, while the main washer cleans dirty normal and bulky laundry. It saves time since you can wash two types of laundry at once instead of waiting for two loads.

With a unique and elegant front design, this LG is not just attractive but also highly functional. The angled position makes it easy to load and unload.

The WM9000HVA has all the best features of LG. There are 14 wash cycles, including a steam cycle, not to mention the TrueBalance Anti-Vibration System and LoDecibel Quiet Operation feature. TurboWash cleans your laundry rapidly and saves 30 minutes for average loads. With Wi-Fi connectivity, you can control your washer with your voice. The cleaning performance of this washer is nearly perfect, and it effectively cleans every kind of dirt and stain.

SideKick pedestal washers and dryers are modular and optional. You can buy the LG washer without the pedestal and the LG WD200CV pedestal washer separately. They have 1.0 cu. ft. capacity and open with a kick.

WM9000HVA

LG DLGX9001V is not only the matching gas dryer for the LG WM9000HVA but also one of the best dryers on the market. With a large 9.0 cu. ft. capacity, there's more than enough room for everything you'll need to wash. It has all the great features of LG dryers like a steam cycle, SmartThinQ, and 14 dry cycles. DLEX9000V is the electric version with same great features. Note that the electric dryer works with 220V electricity.

Washer Dryer 101: Factors to Consider

Whether you're buying your first washer or it's time to upgrade, you need a machine that fits your specific needs. To help you shop with confidence and make a more informed decision, we pulled together the essential factors you need to consider to choose the best washer and dryer for you.

1. Cleaning Performance

Both Samsung and LG are innovators, continually upgrading the features of their appliances. These modern machines have a variety of functions—numerous wash cycles, steam options, and other useful add-ons. When it comes to washing machines, both companies deliver exceptional results. Therefore, they've both got models in our coveted best washer and dryer set rankings.

LG uses steam technology, which penetrates deep inside fabrics and loosens stubborn, dry dirt and stains without damaging your laundry.

LG_Connectivity_wifi

LG has the 6Motion feature, which has different tub motion options for enhanced wash performance.

LG

Samsung has PowerFoam for deep cleaning. This feature mixes water and detergent to clean fabrics thoroughly. Also, like LG, Samsung features Steam technology on select washers.

Samsung

For efficiency, speed, and better cleaning, LG has TurboWash. This system uses spray jets to improve wash performance and effectiveness, reducing full load wash cycles by up to 30 minutes.

Similar to LG's TurboWash, Samsung has SuperSpeed. This feature also utilizes jets to spray foam detergent and warm water to thoroughly clean clothes. It too shortens regular cycle times and affords greater efficiency.

Both washers are equipped with a variety of wash cycles: normal, whites, colors, heavy, quick, wools – and both come with a self-cleaning feature.

2. Energy Efficiency

Believe it or not, washing machines have been around since the 1850s. When the first electric washers were introduced to the market, energy efficiency definitely wasn't a priority. Today, however, water and resource efficiency are central for manufacturers. Machines come standard with energy-saving features like automatic water fill, which senses the laundry load size and fills the tub with only the necessary amount of water.

LG

You've likely noticed the Energy Star label on appliances. Energy Star means products meet the government’s energy efficiency regulations. All Samsung and LG washers are Energy Star approved; however, both companies go beyond the government's basic requirements and have extra functions for additional resource savings.

To prevent wasting water, LG has a SenseClean system that detects the amount of laundry in the washer and adjusts the water level accordingly. This is especially useful for times when you only need to wash a few garments and don’t need the tub filled entirely.

LG's newest FX washer and dryer have even more advanced Artificial Intelligence Direct Drive (AI DD) sensors to further reduce water and energy waste.

3. Noise and Vibration

Compared with other home appliances, washers have the potential to make the most noise and vibration. Modern front load washers spin at more than 1,200 RPM during spin mode, and this high-intensity action can sometimes be heard or felt. Vibration and noise can really annoy you if you live in an apartment or have a centrally located laundry room.

To address this issue, Samsung, LG, and many other home appliance companies have developed high-tech anti-noise systems.

Samsung has VRT Plus Technology, which reduces vibration and noise 40 percent more than its standard VRT. This system incorporates a unique tub design and dedicated sensors to keep loads quiet and balanced.

Similarly, LG's TrueBalance Anti-Vibration System makes LG washers more stable. Thanks to the direct motor drive and balancing system, even heavy loads wash steadily and quietly.

4. Size, Configuration, and Ergonomics

Size

There are three main sizes for front load washing machines. Remember that washer capacity directly impacts how much time you'll spend doing laundry. A bigger tub means fewer loads, and fewer loads mean more free time doing other things you actually enjoy.

  • Compact washer and dryer (aka apartment size): These machines usually have a 24-inch width and a 2 to 2.5 cu. ft. capacity. They may be small in size but possess extensive features and matching, stackable dryers, just like their larger-sized relatives.

  • Full-size washers: These washers are 27 inches wide and hold between 4.3 to 5.5 cu. ft. per load, depending on the model. Full size front load washers and dryers are generally stackable.

  • Mega-size washers: Washers that have a width of over 27 inches (typically 29 to 30 inches) fall into this category. They have huge capacities of up to 6 cu. ft.

Both LG and Samsung make all three sizes. While they each offer only one compact model, Samsung manufactures one of the best-value washers in this size range. The Samsung WW22K6800AW has steam to gently remove stubborn stains. It comes equipped with 14 wash cycles and eight options, providing a dynamic range of wash capabilities.

Besides its solid structure and excellent performance, LG WM1388HW has a wealth of smart features worth mentioning. NFC Tag-On technology allows users to download new wash cycles from the Internet and transfer them to the washer via wireless NFC technology. This ensures that you can easily find the perfect washing program for any type of fabric or soil.

LG

With a variety of width, height, and depth combinations, both brands have similar ranges for their washers.

Overall, Samsung washers have deeper tubs. While standard LG washers usually have a 31- or 33-inch-deep tub, Samsungs comes equipped with one that's 33 to 35 inches deep. It's therefore helpful to measure your space to ensure your washer fits appropriately.

The largest capacity washer, however, is an LG outfitted with a massive 5.8 cu. ft. capacity.

Design

Just from looking at their products, you can tell that design is important to both companies.

When you look at Samsung washers, you'll notice sleek, rounded edges and dark, elegant colors.

Also, take note of Samsung's AddWash door. It eliminates the need to do an extra load of laundry just because you've forgotten an item. You now have the ability to add in an overlooked sock after a cycle has begun–something you can't do with most front loaders.

Samsung

LG has its own aesthetically pleasing designs. With agreeable rectangular doors and stainless steel finishes, these washers have a unique style all their own.

The LG WashTower is perhaps the company's most innovative design. LG solved some major issues with the launch of the LG WKEX200HWA and its siblings. This single unit is shorter than any other stacked pair, so it can fit in more areas of the home, and it has controls at the center instead of the top that are easier to reach. The washer and dryer have all the features you'd want, including steam.

At first, you could get it only with a vented gas or electric dryer, which we thought was a drawback since it limited installation possibilities. Perhaps in response to such criticism, LG recently announced a ventless version with an electric heat pump dryer.

If you like a full sized vertical, stacked washer and dryer but don't want to use a step stool, the LG WashTowever is the ideal solution.

5. Connectivity

As you likely know by now, both LG and Samsung invest heavily in technology. Since both companies are large smartphone manufacturers, it’s no surprise to hear they incorporate mobile technology into their appliances.

Samsung has a dedicated smartphone application: the Samsung Smart Things App. With this app, you can control and monitor your washer and schedule washes remotely. Samsung also has a smart laundry assistant, Q-Rator, which uses artificial intelligence to help you manage your laundry schedule. It gives wash receipts for different kind of fabrics, so you don’t need to think about wash time or temperature when washing different fabric types. Additionally, Q-Rator informs you of maintenance issues and gives you other useful recommendations.

LG

LG also actively integrates smart applications into appliances. Like Samsung, LG has its own app: SmartThinQ. SmartThinQ works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, meaning you can control your washer with your voice. The SmartDiagnosis feature communicates any problems with your waster directly to your smartphone.

On top of these functions, LG has the highly sought-after NFC Tag-On, a feature that allows users to download new wash cycles from the Internet and transfer them to the washer via wireless NFC technology. Your appliance doesn’t need to come with individual cycles for various garment types–you can now get them anytime from the Internet.

Conclusion

Due to outstanding performances on both sides, choosing between these two brands can be a challenge. It really comes down to personal tastes and preferences–it's up to you to consider your needs and to make the best decision based on them.

Both brands have unique looks and novel features. Samsung’s speed cycle is highly effective, and LG has the biggest capacity washer. Still, there are many parallels: Samsung's FlexWash and LG's TwinWash both let you wash two loads at the same time. With two individually controlled washers in the same unit, you can run two kinds of washes with different settings and options, keeping your various types of clothes clean and in excellent condition.

In the end, we can say with certainty that the wash performance of both brands will satisfy you. When it comes to dilemmas, it's the best possible position to be in–you can't go wrong either way.
